Jay West, Chief of Operations and Chief Financial Officer of Gardens West, oversees all of the company's operations. As head of the Landscape Construction Department, he designs and supervises all of the company’s custom design/build projects.
His experience in landscape construction started when he began a landscaping business in 1972. Two years later, his business grew and took on the name Gardens West. Gardens West was incorporated in 1984. Jay ran both the construction and maintenance departments for 12 years before bringing in a new Maintenance Department head in 1984.
His early years were spent in the field. Jay worked as a hands-on crew leader, designing and installing a wide range of residential and commercial projects throughout Sonoma, Marin and Napa Counties. When the Landscape Construction Department's expansion coincided with the addition of David Farren in 1990, Jay left full time field activities. He concentrated on sales and design, while still maintaining quality control in the field through regular supervisory and layout visits.
Jay earned an honors Bachelors Degree at Princeton University, where he focused on an arts and sciences discipline. He spent his summer vacations working for a landscape company, and attended design and horticultural classes at Santa Rosa Junior College. After serving as a US Naval Officer, including duty in Vietnam, he decided not to go on to graduate school in landscape architecture and instead decided to start a landscape business. He holds Landscape, Swimming Pool and General Engineering Contractor licenses, and is a Certified Home Improvement Contractor. He maintains additional licenses in Agricultural Pest Control and Irrigation Auditing.
Jay has served the landscape industry throughout his career. His leadership extends to positions on both the North Coast and statewide Board of Directors of the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA).
